What affects the cost of a hyperbaric session?

1. Soft shell or hard shell chamber

Soft shell chambers are inflatable fabric chambers. They cost less to buy and run, which is why they are common in spas, and many run at around 1.3 ATA, although some newer models go higher. Hard shell chambers are rigid, cost far more to buy, and hold a higher, stable pressure. That is the main reason hard shell sessions have traditionally been priced higher. 2. Pressure and oxygen delivery

Higher pressure needs a stronger chamber and more careful operation. How oxygen is delivered also matters: through a mask or hood from an oxygen concentrator, or from medical oxygen supplies in a clinical unit.

3. Session length

Most wellness sessions are 60 minutes, with 75 and 90 minute options. The time includes slowly raising the pressure at the start and bringing it down at the end, so a longer session gives you more time at full pressure.

4. Clinical setting and supervision

Hospital style centres have medical staff on hand and treat people referred for specific conditions. That level of staffing is the main reason their prices are two to three times higher than wellness clinics.

5. Course length

Hyperbaric sessions are usually taken as a course rather than as a one off, so almost every provider discounts packages. Buying 10 or 20 sessions typically cuts the per session price by 15 to 50 percent.

6. Location

Central London rents push prices up. Clinics in outer London and Surrey are often cheaper for the same chamber type and session length.

Can you get hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the NHS?

Only for specific medical indications. NHS England commissions hyperbaric oxygen therapy at specialist centres for conditions such as decompression illness in divers and gas embolism, and patients are referred by clinicians. It is not available on the NHS for general wellbeing, so private sessions like ours are paid for by the client.

Is it cheaper to buy or rent a chamber?

Home soft shell chambers in the UK typically cost around £9,000 to £19,000 to buy, or £450 to £950 a month to rent, and hard shell chambers start at around £30,000. What to check before you book

• Chamber type and pressure. Ask whether it is soft or hard shell and what pressure it runs at.
• Is the price for the full session time? Check whether the quoted time includes pressurising and depressurising.
• Consultation. A good provider asks about your health history, ears, sinuses and medication before your first session. Ours is included.
• Health claims. Be cautious of any clinic claiming HBOT will treat or cure a condition. That is not something a wellness provider should promise.
• Package terms. Check how long you have to use a package and whether it can be paused.
