SkinPen Precision is a medical microneedling pen that makes thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin to prompt your skin’s own collagen response. At 360 Degree Clinic in Surbiton, near Kingston upon Thames, we use SkinPen for microneedling on the face and neck. A full face treatment is £250 and face and neck is £300, and every treatment starts with a free consultation.
This guide explains what the SkinPen is, how it differs from a dermaroller or a home pen, what happens at your appointment and what to expect afterwards.
What is SkinPen?
SkinPen Precision is a professional microneedling device used in clinics. It was the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance in the United States. It uses a sterile, single use needle cartridge, so every client is treated with a fresh cartridge.
The pen is used with Skinfuse LIFT HG, a gel that lets the pen glide smoothly across the skin while it works.
How SkinPen microneedling works
Very fine needles move straight in and out of the skin at high speed, creating tiny channels. Your skin responds to these channels by producing new collagen and elastin over the following weeks, which is why results build gradually.
Your practitioner adjusts the needle depth for each area as they go, for example working more gently over thinner skin on the forehead than on the cheeks. Small pinpoint spots of blood during treatment are normal and show the depth is right.
SkinPen compared with dermarollers and home pens
| SkinPen in clinic | Dermaroller | Home microneedling pen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How the needles enter | Straight in and out | Roll in at an angle | Varies by device |
| Needles | Sterile, single use cartridge for each client | Often reused | Varies, often reused |
| Depth | Set by a trained practitioner for each area | Fixed | Usually shallow |

What happens at your SkinPen appointment
- Consultation. We look at your skin and ask about medication, skincare and any recent treatments. Your consultation is free.
- Numbing cream. We apply numbing cream for 20 to 30 minutes for comfort.
- Treatment. We cleanse your skin, apply Skinfuse LIFT HG and glide the SkinPen across the face, and the neck if booked, in small sections. The treatment itself usually takes no longer than 30 minutes.
- Aftercare. We apply a soothing product and talk you through your aftercare before you leave.
Does SkinPen microneedling hurt?
Most people describe a vibrating, scratchy feeling rather than pain. The numbing cream makes it more comfortable, and bony areas such as the forehead and jawline can feel a little more sensitive. Tell your practitioner at any point if you want a break.
Downtime and aftercare
Afterwards your skin will look pink to red and may feel warm and tight, a bit like mild sunburn. Redness, swelling and some flaky skin can last for up to three days, and most people go back to work straight after their appointment.
- No make up for 24 hours. Most people can wear make up again after that.
- Use a gentle cleanser and avoid exfoliants and strong active products for the first few days.
- Avoid heat, saunas and exercise that makes you sweat on the day of treatment.
- Use a broad spectrum SPF every day and keep out of direct sun.

How many SkinPen sessions do you need?
We usually recommend a course of 3 to 6 sessions. Results build gradually, and it is normal for changes to show four to six weeks after a treatment, as new collagen forms. We plan your course with you at your consultation.
Who is SkinPen suitable for?
SkinPen microneedling suits people who want to improve the look of skin texture, tone, fine lines and pores on the face and neck. It may not be suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have broken skin or an active skin infection on the area, or take medication that affects how your skin recovers. We check this at your consultation before booking any treatment.
