How a PRP Facial Works, Step by Step
The procedure has four stages and takes 45 to 60 minutes from start to finish.
- Blood draw. A small sample is taken from your arm, exactly as it would be for a routine blood test.
- Separation. The sample is spun in a centrifuge so the components separate by density. The platelet-rich layer is drawn off. This takes a few minutes and happens in the room with you.
- Microneedling. After numbing cream has taken effect, a microneedling device passes over the treatment area and creates controlled micro-channels in the skin.
- Application. Your plasma is applied across the skin as the channels are made, so it reaches past the surface rather than sitting on top of it.
Platelets carry a range of proteins the body draws on during its ordinary repair processes. Microneedling on its own prompts the skin to begin that repair. A PRP facial adds your own concentrated plasma into the same moment.
Vampire Facial or Vampire Facelift: the Difference
These two names get used interchangeably and they are not the same treatment.
- A vampire facial is PRP applied to the skin with microneedling. It works on the surface and the layers just beneath it, so it is aimed at skin texture, fine lines, pores and the look of scarring.
- A vampire facelift is PRP injected alongside a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, which is used to add volume and change contour. It is a different procedure with a different purpose, and filler is not your own tissue.

PRP Facial or Microneedling on Its Own
Microneedling on its own is a well established treatment and it costs less. The question is whether adding your own plasma is worth the difference, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you are treating and what you want to spend.
Most of the published research on the combination looks at atrophic acne scarring, where studies have generally compared microneedling with PRP against microneedling alone, often on opposite sides of the same face. The broader picture for general skin rejuvenation is thinner. The American Academy of Dermatology is direct about this and notes there is limited evidence either way, largely because PRP is regulated as a device rather than as a drug and so has attracted fewer trials.

What to Expect
Before
Your consultation comes first and it is free. We take a medical history, ask what you are hoping for and check that PRP is suitable. Come hydrated and having eaten, as you would for a blood test. If you take blood thinners, or you have a blood clotting condition, tell us at the consultation.
On the day
Allow 45 to 60 minutes. Numbing cream goes on first and needs around 20 minutes to work. Most clients describe the needling as a series of quick scratches rather than a sharp pain, and your practitioner can pause whenever you ask.
Afterwards
Expect redness that looks like mild sunburn on the day, sometimes with a little swelling. This usually settles within one to three days. Pinpoint bruising is possible. Keep the skin clean and free of make-up for the rest of the day, then go back to your normal routine. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming, strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours, and use SPF while the skin settles.
How results build
PRP works through your own repair processes, so nothing changes overnight. What clients most commonly report is that the skin feels smoother and looks fresher over the weeks following each session, which is why a course of three spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is the usual starting point. PRP is generally not suitable if you have a blood clotting disorder, are taking blood thinners, have a blood borne infection such as hepatitis or HIV, have certain blood cancers, or have skin cancer or an active infection in the area to be treated. We go through all of this at the free consultation and we will decline the treatment if it is not right for you.
