Aftercare Guide for Dermal Fillers
Learn about the appropriate aftercare following a session of Dermal Fillers to ensure you are able to maximise results and reduce the risk of any issues.
Whether it’s your first treatment or you’ve had Dermal Fillers before, it’s always important to be aware of the potential side effects and necessary aftercare to protect and enhance your results. For a more in-depth look at this treatment, please read our Ultimate Guide to Dermal Fillers.
Although this treatment continues to be a popular selection for those who want to add volume to areas of the face or enhance a certain feature, there is still a lot of confusion about appropriate aftercare. In our aftercare guide, the skin specialists at our Surbiton clinic outline all the necessary aftercare advice for this popular injectable treatment. We’ll cover everything you need to know, including potential side effects and what you should and shouldn’t do to protect your results.
First, we’ll start with the potential side effects you may experience following a session of Dermal Fillers.
Side effects
What are the potential side effects following a Dermal Fillers session?
With almost all injectable treatments, such as Dermal Fillers, you should expect there to be some minor side effects.
You will be pleased to know that these side effects commonly keep to the treated area and most pass within a few days following treatment. Side effects usually clear entirely within 7 to 14 days.
Side effects to be expected following your Dermal Fillers include:
- Bruising
- Light Swelling
- Redness
- Tenderness
Although there is no downtime for this treatment, we would recommend booking your Dermal Fillers away from any big events or engagements to allow for your side effects to reduce and to maximise your visible results.
Aftercare Guidance for Dermal Fillers
Drink water and stay hydrated
One way to reduce side effects quickly and provide the best chance of enhancing your results is to drink a lot of water and stay hydrated in the days following your treatment. Although it is important to stay hydrated for general wellbeing, drinking water is needed to encourage the bodies natural healing process by pumping oxygenated blood through the treated area to reduce redness, tenderness and bruising.
We recommend drinking your recommended daily amount, equivalent to 8 glasses of water per day, in the week following your treatment.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
Although blood flow is great for health in general, raising your blood pressure through exercise can cause your fillers to spread. This can lead to uneven results and even move the filler to unwanted areas of the face.
If you would like to stay active during the first 48 hours, we recommend lightly walking at a pace that won’t cause you to sweat or significantly raise your blood pressure. Maybe spend the downtime watching a show you’ve been meaning to watch or relaxing at home with a book.
Avoid all alcohol for 48 hours
We completely understand that you may want to celebrate a successful dermal filler treatment with a glass of champagne, but please avoid any alcohol for the first 48 hours following a Dermal Fillers session. Alcohol in all forms has blood thinning properties which will prolong your side effects, making bruising and redness much worse and last much longer than it needs to.
We recommend booking your treatment away from weekends or any events or engagements where you may want to partake in drinking alcohol. This will only make your side effects worse and last for longer.
Avoid touching or applying skincare products to the treated area
As the area where the fillers were injected will be very sensitive and potentially bruised, you should avoid touching or applying any skincare products until your side effects have reduced significantly. Although it can be tempting to massage the area, we strongly discourage you from interfering with the filler and potentially impacting your results.
As the injection site will be open immediately following treatment, we strongly recommend avoiding facial skincare products until your side effects have reduced. Doing so may increase your risk of infection and prolong your side effects for longer than necessary. This also includes the application of makeup, so we recommend having your treatment away from any social engagements where you may want to wear makeup.
Keep the treated area clean... but be gentle!
Now, although we previously mentioned avoiding touching or massaging the treated area, it is still important to keep the injection site clean. This is to avoid the risk of infection via dirt or bacteria entering below the surface of the skin.
We recommend using a soft cloth and a small amount of soap to gently brush the area where your dermal fillers were applied. Be sure that you don’t apply too much pressure as this may force some of the filler solution into areas you may not want it. You should also make sure this is done with warm, not hot, water to avoid causing side effects, like redness and swelling, to get worse. You should also avoid having shower that are too hot during this time as they can also contribute to prolonged side effects.
Follow the aftercare advice and contact your practitioner if you have concerns
Following any treatment, it is common practice for your practitioner to provide accurate aftercare guidance to follow after your treatment. This should be a standard procedure as it is with every treatment performed at 360 Degree Clinic, however, if your practitioner does not provide this please ask them to provide you with this.
In the extremely unlikely case that your side effects do not reduce within the given time period, contact the practitioner who performed the treatment. They will be obliged to guide you through the aftercare process and can help to provide peace of mind during this time.
If your side effects escalate or you are concerned about a possible infection, they will also be able to advise you on when is appropriate to contact your GP. Although the risk of infection or prolonged side effects is extremely rare, it is important to know that your practitioners are there to help even after your treatment. Don’t be afraid to contact them.
