Aftercare for Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Learn about the appropriate aftercare following a session of Anti-Wrinkle Injections to ensure you receive your desired anti-ageing results.
Whether it’s your first treatment or you’ve had a session of anti-wrinkle injections in the past, it’s always important to be aware of the potential side effects and necessary aftercare to protect your results. For more information about this treatment in general, please read our Ultimate Guide to Anti-Wrinkle Injections.
Although this treatment continues to be a popular selection for those looking to rejuvenate their face or treat a condition, there is still a lot of confusion about appropriate aftercare. In our aftercare guide, the injectable specialists at our clinic in Surbiton will outline all the necessary aftercare information about this popular treatment, including what you should and shouldn’t do to protect your results.
First, we’ll start with the potential side effects you may experience following your treatment.
Side effects
What are the potential side effects for Anti-Wrinkle treatment?
As with most, if not all, injectable treatments, some minor side effects should be expected. Common side effects of wrinkle-relaxing injections include redness, bruising, swelling, and occasionally a headache, nausea, and/or muscle weakness.
You will be pleased to know that side effects from anti-wrinkle treatments commonly keep to the treated area and often pass within a few days following treatment. You can expect to return to your regular activity within 48 hours of treatment.
Aftercare Guidance for anti-wrinkle injections
Avoid touching or applying skincare products to the treated area
As the treated area will be very sensitive and potentially bruised, you should avoid touching or applying any skincare products to this area. You may feel the urge to massage the area, but we strongly recommend against this to prevent interfering with the solution and potentially impacting your results.
As the injection site will be open, we strongly recommend avoiding applying skincare products to your face until your side effects have significantly reduced. Doing so may increase your risk of infection and prolong your side effects for longer than necessary. This also includes the application of makeup, so we recommend having your treatment away from any social engagements where you may want to use this.
Stay upright and so not lay down for the first 4 hours after treatment
Make sure that following your treatment, you keep your body and head upright to avoid misplacing your injected solution. Sitting upright is absolutely fine, however lying down for a nap, for example, may cause issues. Staying upright will allow your anti-wrinkle solution to set in the appropriate place and not spread to other unwanted areas of the face.
We recommend booking your anti-wrinkle treatment at a time when you have the ability to keep upright for the following four hours.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
Although blood flow is great for health in general, raising your blood pressure through exercise can cause your injected solution to migrate to the surrounding areas of the face. Like lying down, this can impact your results and cause the anti-wrinkle solution to spill into unwanted areas.
If you would like to stay active during the first 48 hours, we recommend lightly walking, however nothing that will cause you to work up a sweat or significantly raise your blood pressure. Maybe spend the downtime watching a show you’ve been meaning to watch or relaxing at home.
Avoid alcohol for 48 hours
We totally understand that you may want to celebrate a successful anti-wrinkle session, but please avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours following treatment. Alcohol in all forms has blood thinning properties which will prolong your side effects, making bruising and redness much worse than they need to be.
We recommend booking your treatment away from weekends or any events or engagements where you may want to partake in drinking alcohol. This will only make your side effects worse and last for longer.
Keep the treated area clean... but be gentle!
Now, although we previously mentioned avoiding touching or massaging the treated area, it is still important to keep the injection site clean. This is to avoid the risk of infection via dirt or bacteria entering the injection site.
We recommend using a soft cloth and a small amount of soap to gently brush the treated area. Be sure that you don’t apply too much pressure as this may force some of the solution into areas you may not want it. You should also make sure this is done with warm, not hot, water to avoid causing side effects, like redness and swelling, to get worse. You should also avoid having shower that are too hot during this time as they can also contribute to prolonged side effects.
Avoid saunas and steam rooms until your side effects reduce
Following on from the previous point, saunas and steam rooms will also cause your side effects to last longer. We recommend avoiding all hot environments, including staying in the sun for prolonged periods on hot days as this can impact your results.
Contact your practitioner if you have concerns or are unsure of infection
In the extremely unlikely case that your side effects do not reduce within the given time period, contact your practitioner. They will be able to guide you through the aftercare process and can help to provide peace of mind during this time.
If your side effects escalate or you are concerned about a possible infection, they will also be able to advise you on when to contact your GP. Although the risk of infection or prolonged side effects is extremely rare, it is important to know that your practitioners are there to help even after your treatment. Don’t be afraid to contact them.
